Measuring Atmospheric Icing Rate in Mixed-Phase Clouds Using Filtered Particle Data

نویسندگان

چکیده

In-cloud icing of objects is caused by supercooled microscopic water droplets carried the wind. To estimate rate in such conditions, liquid content (LWC) cloud and median volume diameter (MVD) are measured. Mixed-phase clouds also contain ice crystals that must be ruled out order to avoid overestimation rate. Typically, droplet instruments not able do this. A particle imaging instrument condition evaluation method (ICEMET) was used observe in-cloud conditions. This lensless device uses a computational reconstruct shadow images objects. The size, position, shape descriptors each These data then filter crystals. size distribution measurement determine LWC MVD. performance tested under mixed-phase conditions wind tunnel on turbine. measured MVD values were model accretion cylinder-shaped object according ISO 12494:2017 standard. In tunnel, modeled mass compared with weighed collected cylinder. According our results, rates overestimated 65.6% average without filtering Thus, ability distinguish between essential for estimating properly.

Torque and Axial Loading Physics for Measuring Atmospheric Icing Load and Icing Rate

Measuring icing load and icing rate are important parameters for an atmospheric icing sensor. A new icing sensor has recently been designed and developed at Narvik University College for measuring atmospheric icing rate, icing load and icing type. Unlike the existing atmospheric icing sensors commercially available in market, which uses the axial loading for measuring icing load and icing rate,...

Measuring Water Droplets to Detect Atmospheric Icing

This thesis describes the exploration of amethod tomeasure the droplet size and the concentration of atmospheric liquid water. The purpose is to find a cost effective technique to detect the conditions for icing on structures. Icing caused by freezing atmospheric water can be a significant problem for infrastructure such as power lines, roads and air traffic. About one third of the global insta...

In situ characterization of mixed phase clouds using the Small Ice Detector and the Particle Phase Discriminator

Mixed phase clouds (MPCs) represent a great source of uncertainty for both climate predictions and weather forecasts. In particular, there is still a lack of understanding on how ice forms in these clouds. In this work we present a technique to analyze in situ measurements of MPCs performed with the latest instruments from the Small Ice Detector family. These instruments record high-resolution ...

Phase transformation of mixed-phase clouds

The glaciation time of a mixed-phase cloud due to the Wegener–Bergeron–Findeisen mechanism is calculated using an adiabatic one-dimensional numerical model for the cases of zero, ascending, descending and oscillating vertical velocities. The characteristic values of the glaciation time are obtained for different concentrations of ice particles and liquid-water content. Steady state is not possi...
